There is nothing we love more than when our students are passionate about art. Usually they show up in our class, not knowing what they are about to make, and we set out to inspire them. Recently, our students have been inspiring us!
More and more students come into class and can’t wait to tell us about the exciting new art they have seen and want to try. They’ve just watched a video online of an artist making an incredible piece of art, and they ask us, when are we going to do that?
Well we’ve watched the videos, and we have to admit. They’re right!
Art on social media may seem like all style and no substance, but this is far from true. The kids and artists might no know it, but many of the fundamental skills of art are happening in those video. Composition. Colour Theory. Negative Space. Etc.
Most importantly, these projects are really fun.
Usually we focus on one major painting, something that takes a few weeks of work to complete. The nature of trending art leans towards quicker projects. One’s that are more about expression than a formal technique. So for the first time ever, we will be doing three paintings on canvas. Each one could stand on its own, but together they will be even better, creating a cohesive group. One painting we are calling Pour, one Flow, and one Spin.
Another popular trend is Art Challenges. These are a great way to make fun and fast-paced art. Restrictions on time and colour force the artist to be more creative, think outside the box. But most of all, fail. Art isn’t also about perfect results. Sometimes it’s about laughing with your friends at the crazy thing you’ve just created.
We are also leaving room for suggestions. There’s a lot of art online, and we want our students to keep inspiring us with new projects.
