2022 Fall Session

This Fall we are not just going big – we’re going 3D!

We have planned a bold collection of innovated art projects. We are introducing a variety of new tools, technologies, and techniques, and with those comes amazing opportunities to expand a young artist’s skills, capabilities and imagination.

As artists, we strive to continually push ourselves. The passion and excitement you feel when you try new things and succeed, changes everything. One of the greatest benefits of trying new art mediums is that it actually increases your creative capacity.

We at Messy Pants strive to bring our students new ways to explore art, and especially new ways of expressing themselves. Exposing a young artist to new ideas and art concepts is like opening up a new world of possibilities.

This Fall we are diving deep into 3D Dimensional Art. We will look at the differences between 2 Dimensional and 3 Dimensional spaces. Each student will learn about the concepts of Depth and Perspective. So much of our world is now a digital one.  Everything from phone apps, medical imaging, computer programs,  games and movies requires you to think and work in 3D.

We will be getting our hands messy and having fun too! 3D glasses and drawings may seem like a fad from the past, but it’s a magic that never fails to bring a smile to a child’s face.  We will be creating 3D Sculptures out of cement, and giant 3D Animals Portraits out of cardboard and Paper Mache. We will even be making a painting using heaping globs of modelling paste with palette knives to layer and mold mountains of paint.

We’ve really tried to pack a little of everything into our 2022 Fall Session. We are going big and hope you come along for the ride.

One of the best ways to learn and to understand is by doing, and this is certainly true of 3D printing. During our Fall Session each student will learn about the way our 3D printing machine works, its parts, and how to use it.  We will also learn about the great impact 3D Printing has and will have on their lives and their futures. So many of the concepts used in 3D Printing are also used in other mediums of art and design. We will be expanding on the concepts learned with the 3D printer when we make other projects through the session.  Concepts such as ‘maximum size’, ‘the principle of infill’ and ‘bridging’, all have their uses in sculpture as well as 3D Printing.  The Concept of ‘X, Y and Z’ — which is a fundamental to 3D modelling, is a concept found in virtual all perspective drawing and painting.  And best of all, each student will walk away with their very own 3D printed art piece! They will hold in their hands something tangible that they saw in their head as an image, that is now real.

Textured Painting

The painting this session may look simple, but it actually requires a great deal of design and planning. Each student will learn how to properly use a palette knife, mix modelling paste and then, the best part, spread that thick paint all around this board creating huge peaks paint. Palette knives are an incredible art tool, and the process of spreading mediums is not only fun, but requires a completely different approach than traditional painting. One has to visualize the final outcome and anticipate the movement of the paste or paint. Though each piece will look similar,  in reality they will all be as unique as the child that created it.

Anaglyph and Optical Illusion Drawing

We always make sure that each of our Sessions has a drawing component. Drawing by hand is the foundation of so many art mediums, and is one of the best ways to understand fundamental art concepts. This Session we will be taking the concepts learned in 3D Printing and applying them to drawing. From depth and perspective, to 3D shapes and Polygons. But that’s not all! We will also be whipping out the blue and red markers to explore the world of 3D art, also known as Anaglyph. There is nothing quite like watch something you’ve drawn in 2D jump off the page into the world of 3D. Students will love learning this, and will delight in showing their friends their new magical drawing powers.

Cement and Polymer Clay Sculpture

This mixed media combo project combines one new material and one old. Where as Polymer Clay is a very frequent material used at Messy Pants, cement is not. We will experimenting with 3D by using fillable moulds with cement to create planters. We will then use handmade succulents to fill our planters. This planter will last year around and is a perfect centrepiece or decoration for a special someone’s room or office.
