7 Week Winter Session
Wassily Kandinsky, a pioneer of abstract art, used vivid colors and dynamic compositions to explore emotion and spirituality. Our Winter Session class will explore the beauty of snow and the winter season, brought to life through bright, bold colors and abstract forms, celebrating the spirit of Kandinsky’s vibrant style.
Create your own masterpiece with our handmade felt scarf project, a unique opportunity to combine art and functionality. Drawing inspiration from Kandinsky’s bold colors and abstract designs, students will select their own palette to craft a personalized, wearable work of art. This cozy and creative scarf adds a touch of artistic flair to your winter wardrobe while showcasing your individuality.
This winter session, we’re diving into the timeless art of pottery with the clay wheel—a tool that has shaped human creativity for thousands of years. From ancient civilizations to modern studios, the clay wheel has been a cornerstone of artistic expression, allowing creators to transform raw material into functional and decorative masterpieces. Working with the wheel fosters patience, precision, and a deep connection to the craft, offering artists a unique blend of challenge and reward. Through this hands-on experience, students will not only explore the historical significance of pottery but also develop their skills and personal artistic voice.
In our 3D wooden block model project, students will embark on a creative journey to build and hand-paint a large-scale model using 1-inch wooden cubes. With over 50 blocks to work with, each student will choose from a variety of design options, allowing for personalized artistic expression. This project encourages spatial thinking, problem-solving, and attention to detail as students carefully construct their models and bring them to life with vibrant colors. The end result will be a huge, unique, three-dimensional artwork that showcases both creativity and craftsmanship.
In this project, students will create a vibrant 22×22 inch acrylic painting on canvas, inspired by Wassily Kandinsky’s Winter Landscape 1909. While the subject matter reflects the serene beauty of winter, Kandinsky’s use of bold, bright colors brings the scene to life with energy and movement. Students will explore how to blend wintery elements with unexpected colors to capture the season’s essence in a dynamic and modern way. This painting will allow them to experiment with color theory, texture, and abstraction, creating a unique winter scene that is full of warmth and visual excitement.
Art fundamentals and practice are indispensable in fine arts, encompassing composition, design, art history, cognitive development, studio materials, and fine art techniques. These elements form the bedrock of creative expression, inspire artists, nurture critical thinking skills, and hone artistic craftsmanship, culminating in impactful artwork. Our Fall Session embraces these essential fundamentals as we embark on our artistic endeavors. Studying the masters is pivotal in artistic growth. Just as aspiring musicians study Mozart, painters refine their skills by studying visual arts masters. This exploration not only offers technical guidance but also ignites creativity, fostering an appreciation for artistic heritage and the evolution of our medium. By immersing ourselves in their works, we absorb their wisdom, artistic choices, and innovative approaches, laying the groundwork for our artistic journeys. At our studio, we believe each student is a MASTER IN THE MAKING, with Art Fundamentals and Practice marking the beginning of their creative odyssey.
STUDIO MATERIALS
Wassily Kandinsky was a groundbreaking artist known for pioneering abstract art. His use of bold colors, dynamic compositions, and a deep exploration of the emotional and spiritual power of art transformed the art world. Kandinsky believed that art should express inner experiences rather than represent the physical world, and his innovative approach helped shape the development of modern art. His contributions have had a lasting impact on art history, influencing countless artists and movements, and cementing his legacy as one of the most important figures in 20th-century art.3
Kandinsky’s 1909 painting Winter Landscape captures the essence of winter through vibrant, non-realistic colors. While depicting a snowy, serene scene, the painting deviates from traditional landscapes by infusing bright, expressive colors and dynamic shapes, reflecting Kandinsky’s early exploration of abstraction. The piece combines elements of the natural world with emotional intensity, demonstrating his belief in the power of color to evoke deep, spiritual responses. Winter Landscape is a key example of how Kandinsky began to move away from pure representation and towards a more abstract, emotive style.
